514 years ago today, Christopher Columbus signed a contract with Spain to find the Indies.On August 3 (log), he set sail from Palos de la Frontera. 70 days later (October 12 on the Julian calendar, October 21 by modern dating standards), he arrived in the Bahamas.
On January 16, 1493, he left the new world, landing in Lisbon, Portugal on March 4. The return crossing took 49 days.
