Ceres makes a comeback!
Aug 16, 2006 - 02:50 PMFor now.
Or maybe not.
The asteroid Ceres (currently being considered for a bump up to "planet" status) was discovered in 1801, assigned a planetary symbol, and remained listed as a planet in astronomy books for about half a century, until other asteroids were discovered.
But now, the International Astronomical Union might restore Ceres to the roll call of planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Charon, Xena.
However, Xena's name could change. And more planets will probably be added to the list.
Unless those pesky Pluto-haters have their way...
