In August 2001, the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission accepted a design concept for the median landscaping on Ramon Road and Gene Autry Trail, directly under the primary final-approach glideslope into the airport. Created by landscape architect Ron Gregory, this project is called "Mountain, Sails." Funding was provided by a federal grant.

These artworks borrow from the panoramic backdrop offered by the airport terminal and surrounding mountains. Sculptures that mimic the mountain profile were constructed from perforated metal mesh with tubular steel frames:

Other sculptures at the airport include: Charlie Farrell, Forget Me Not, Le Compas de Vulcan and Machine Age.
