RIP: 255-year-old Adwaitya

Mar 23, 2006 - 03:12 PM
Zookeepers at the Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata (Calcutta) are in mourning today for Adwaitya ("The Only One"), a giant Aldabra tortoise. Zoo records say Adwaitya was born in 1750, but some have claimed his birthdate was actually in 1705. The zoo will use carbon-dating to determine his real age... then his shell will be preserved onsite.

The average lifespan of an Aldabra tortoise is well beyond 100 years. Most of these animals are found on Aldabra, an atoll of four large coral islands in the Indian Ocean. This area has been protected from human interference, so 152,000 giant tortoises live there.
