On this date in 1781, Sir William Herschel (1738-1822) discovered Uranus.

There's a joke buried in there somewhere.

Ol' Bill worked obsessively, and was immeasurably helped by his sister Caroline. She often took notes for him, and once, while he was grinding and polishing a telescope mirror for 16 hours straight, she placed bits of food into his mouth so he could continue uninterrupted.
