Deserts of the world: Kyzyl-Kum

The Kyzyl-Kum ("Red Sand") Desert lies just to the east of the Kara-Kum ("Black Sand") desert. It covers about 115,000 square miles of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, and lies between the Syr Darya and the Amu Darya Rivers, southeast of the Aral Sea.Precipitation reaches 4-8 inches annually, and occurs mainly in winter and spring. The area is primarily made up of sand ridges upon which desert plants grow.
