Kitchen Kitchen: Energy, Imagination and Pride

Jan Boydstun has energy. And imagination. And boundless enthusiasm. All three have helped make her Indian Wells Kitchen Kitchen store a prime shopping destination in the Palm Springs area. But as Kitchen Kitchen enjoys its 35th year in business, it's pride that moves her the most. Because this year, her 21 year old son Ryan is working at the store, marking the third generation to be involved in this family-owned kitchenware shop.
"He's great with customers and he can really sell," beams Boydstun, whose parents started Kitchen Kitchen in 1979 in when they found retirement a little dull. They talked Jan into helping out for a few months when they expanded to the Indian Wells location. That was more than 25 years ago. Jan met her husband, put down roots, had three sons, and found herself loving the kitchenware business. Both her parents have passed on and Jan enthusiastically devotes herself to expanding and re-imagining the business they started.
Along the way, she has become a television personality as the Gadget Gal, demonstrating kitchen gadgets on Discovery Channel's Home Matters and other shows. She's traveled the world as a gadget expert, including tours of Europe and appearing on Holland America cruise ships.
Kitchen Kitchen's original Rancho Mirage location was consolidated with the Indian Wells store, and a few years ago, Jan moved the shop seven doors down so she could build a state-of-the- art kitchen to show off Kitchen Kitchen's products. Now the kitchen is continuously booked with cooking classes, demonstrations and parties. The parties, where Kitchen Kitchen's private chef prepares a custom menu for a handful of guests, are popular for special events but also simply as dinner parties among friends. Invariably one booking leads to another as guests see how much fun it is to throw a dinner party without housecleaning, cooking or cleanup. "It's everything you love about having a party and none of the work," Jan says.
Kitchen Kitchen sells coffee, specialty foods, gifts, top-of-the-line knives, cookware and bakeware, Breville electrics, kitchen linens, handcrafted aprons and of course gadgets. Its famous gadget wall has everything from Charles Viancin's Lilypad line of tight-sealing silicone lids (best-sellers all) to a little device that makes hardboiled eggs square. Jan loves gadgets that simplify everyday tasks, like Mystic Maid microfiber towels which clean up any mess with just water. "People tell me, 'You have changed my life,'" Jan says. "I love hearing that."
