Certain professions — doctor, plumber, auto mechanic, and lawyer — are absolutely essential to civilized living. Like many of my colleagues I informally surveyed, I have needed legal advice only occasionally. I’ve retained only three lawyers in my adult life, two with the same firm. All my cases had either neutral or favorable outcomes. The fact is, good legal advice might not always have the desired outcome, but it will always save your sanity.
Like most of us, you might have gone years, even decades, without requiring legal advice. But then the day comes. Whom do you choose? You have no idea how to go about finding good legal counsel. (Forget that guy who got Uncle Jimmy off. He specialized in DUI, and you need a probate attorney.)
Nearly 150 years ago, James Martindale, an Indiana-born lawyer and businessman, published The Martindale Directory, which was intended “to furnish to lawyers, bankers, wholesale merchants, real estate agents, and all others … the address of one reliable law firm, one reliable bank, and one reliable real estate office in every city in the United States … ”
If it had stopped there, Martindale would have been the original Angie’s List for legal eagles, but over the next century and a half, it added law firm profiles, foreign lawyers and firms, and, in 1930, purchased the publishing rights to Hubbell’s Legal Directory, which contained a digest of state laws, court calendars, and a selective list of lawyers and firms. Today, the annual, two-volume set is the ultimate legal source for more than 1 million lawyers and firms worldwide.
For the first time, Palm Springs Life, has compiled a list of 114 attorneys in the Coachella Valley who either are represented in Martindale’s listings or who have been selected by the magazine. Martindale-rated lawyers are marked by an asterisk.
